
Prof. Vladimir S. Litvinenko, Rector & Professor of St. Petersburg State Mining Institute and Phoenix President Leo Fox shake on agreement signed in Moscow three days earlier. Phoenix and the St. Petersburg State Mining Institute signed an agreement of scientific and technical cooperation on February 15, 2002 in Moscow.
Phoenix President Leo Fox and Senior Geophysicist Olex Ingerov visited Russia in mid-February with the Team Canada Trade Mission, the seventh led by the Prime Minister of Canada, Hon. Jean Chretien. First instituted by the Prime Minister in 1994, the Team Canada missions are designed to promote Canada in markets with large growth potential.
Ontario Premier Mike Harris and some members of the Ontario group (including Phoenix) continued to St. Petersburg after the Moscow events. Ontario hosted a reception in the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, addressed by Premier Harris, Dr. Anna Biolik, Canadian Consul in St. Petersburg and Ms. Bonnie Winchester, President and CEO of Ontario Exports Inc.
The Mining Institute acquired a Phoenix V5-2000 MT system in 2001, in an earlier agreement with Phoenix, and it will be used for training the next generation of geophysical students in MT and other electrical methods of exploration. As mentioned in The Phoenix #22, MT was co-invented in Russia in the early 1950s, and Russia has always been strong in EM techniques.
